FSU baseball (21-15, 15-12 ACC) used the long ball to power past Stetson for a 9-5 mid-week win.

I wrote in the preview how Stetson pitchers would be around the plate and let their defense work for them.

The only problem is FSU batters hit four home the defense couldn’t field. Mike Martin Jr. used Johnny Wholestaff (multiple pitchers) on the mound, with Carson Montgomery getting the start.

Montgomery was hit pretty well in the two innings pitched, allowing four hits and two earned runs in the first inning.

However, Matheu Nelson and Nander De Sedas responded in the bottom of the first and second innings with home runs to take a 3-2 lead.

Elijah Cabell and Robby Martin went deep, but it was the bottom of the FSU lineup that had multiple hits, which is an area that needed to produce.  Elijah Cabell and Nander De Sedas had three hits, and Isaiah Perry had two hits, with Perry finishing with two doubles. Robby Martin had three RBI’s, and Cabell and De Sedas finished with two RBI’s.

Despite the home runs, the offense had 16 strikeouts and left 12 runners on base. FSU pitchers were solid, with 12 strikeouts, 10 hits, and one walk, with three earned runs allowed.

FSU baseball seems to be playing more together as a team. The pitching was carrying the load early in the year, but the offense has produced a lot of runs of late. If they can consistently get production from the bottom half of the lineup they’ll be a dangerous team late in the season. They have the pitching to play with anyone.

However, the defense can’t afford to commit three errors.

The Noles will be back in action Friday evening when they host Troy at 5 p.m. ET. The game will air on the ACC Extra Network or ESPN3 if you have a cable provider.
