FSU Football: Wednesday was the first day we heard about Isaiah Bolden’s position change. How will this affect the team moving forward.

FSU football head coach Mike Norvell announced Wednesday morning that a former four-star top 30 cornerback was switching positions to wide receiver.

Isaiah Bolden, from Tampa, Florida, was touted as a “hard-hitting cover corner” with track star speed and special teams abilities. In 2017, he committed to FSU football and played a few minutes against Samford before redshirting. In 2019, he played in every game and started in the Sun Bowl.

He didn’t get much attention behind Stanford Samuels III and Asante Samuel Jr. Now we come to today, where Bolden has changed positions to wide receiver. I like the switch. Bolden, who is 6′ 2″ almost 200 pounds, has been putting in work at this new spot the last week or so.

I like this move because Bolden’s skill set is so individual. The only person with his size and speed is Tamorrion Terry, and with both he and D.J. Matthews set to leave the for the draft, the next generation needs more talent.

The defensive backroom should be good for a while with Travis Jay emerging, Jarrian Jones proving his stuff, Damorie Tate on deck, and one of the top defensive back recruiting classes in 2021. Bolden was leapfrogged, by no fault of his own, FSU is just DBU.

When we look at the wide receiver room, the players behind Helton, Terry, and Matthews still have some development left to do. It looks like Jordan Young and Warren Thompson are putting it together, but there is a gap. In a fast-paced spread-style offense, it would be ideal to have depth at the wide receiver position, not to mention two receivers are coming off injuries that cost them half of last season.

There are now 10 scholarship wide receivers, and the skill sets and depth that Bolden brought over are massively important.
