FSU football: Video highlights from Saturday’s scrimmage
By Kelvin Hunt
FSU football held its first scrimmage of fall camp Saturday night. Here are some video highlights courtesy of FSU Sports Info.
FSU football has one week of fall camp under their belt and the first scrimmage of the Mike Norvell era.
I provided some notes and thoughts from the press conference the coaches spoke at after the press conference here.
However, there’s only so much one can glean from a press conference when you can’t see what transpired on the field.
Luckily, FSU football released some short clips from the scrimmage Sunday that’s viewable below:
One of the first things that jump out at me is James Blackman getting rid of the ball quickly and hitting a running back in stride so he could get upfield in a hurry for positive yardage.
Blackman also had a couple of more throws that were on target, hitting the receiver in stride for yards after the catch.
Another thing that stood out was the defensive line closing up holes in the run game and getting pressure on the quarterback. The latter is of utmost importance to the overall defense being successful in 2020.
Did you see FSU running back Jashaun Corbin hit Jaiden Lars-Woodbey with the truck stick at the 1:19 mark? My goodness, that was reminiscent of Cam Akers running over that Miami player a couple of years ago.
True freshman Chubba Purdy made the highlight on a touchdown scamper that showed off some speed and strength. That’s one aspect that gives him an advantage over the other three quarterbacks.
He can throw and be a factor in the run game, but the other three candidates have either one or the other. Although, James Blackman is slightly underrated when scrambling with his legs.
Another thing that stood out was the physicality in the video. The pads were popping, and the defense laid the wood a couple of times in those clips. That’s something the team has been missing consistently for years.
So, great first scrimmage, and here’s to hoping they’ll be able to continue practicing and playing less than a month against Georgia Tech!
