FSU football is in an all too familiar position heading into the 2020 college football season. They are not listed in the top 25 and received zero votes from the coaches.

FSU football finished the 2019 season with an embarrassing loss in the Sun Bowl against Arizona State.

They were 6-7 on the season, so it’s no surprise they are not listed in any preseason top-25 polls where humans are voting.

All of the polls or power rankings like ESPN’s FPI or SP+ have the Noles among the top 30-40 programs in the nation.

The Noles continue to be one of the most talented teams in nation and return several key players on offense and defense.

Preseason polls are meaningless, to begin with, but I thought it was worth mentioning how ridiculous these polls can be based on who receives votes.

FSU football didn’t receive a single vote in the Amway Coaches poll released Thursday. However, teams like Duke, Miami, Tulane, and Nebraska received votes?

Here’s a look at those four teams and their record last season:

  • Duke: 5-7
  • Miami: 6-7
  • Tulane: 7-6
  • Nebraska: 5-7

Trust me, I know FSU wasn’t great by any means last season, but I don’t see how those teams received votes, and the Noles didn’t either?

I prefer to be in this position of not receiving votes with a new coaching staff and expectations being lower than usual.

The advanced metric rankings tell the real story and are more accurate, but this shows how ridiculous preseason rankings are, to begin with when it comes to humans voting.

The funny thing is FSU will likely start the season 2-0 by beating Georgia Tech and Samford and then appear in the top 25 rankings heading into the Miami game.

Why? Georgia Tech and Samford are not good programs, but that’s just how voting seems to work nowadays.
