FSU basketball is breaking all kinds of new ground during the nine-game winning streak. The latest bracketology has them in new territory.

No. 5 FSU basketball (16-2, 6-1 ACC) has its highest ranking in most of our lifetimes after its come from behind victory over rival Miami Saturday afternoon.

The wins last week coupled with teams ranked above them losing badly has put the Noles at the No. 5 spot in the country.

They are alone at the top of the ACC Conference, holding a tiebreaker over Louisville who they previously beat on the road a couple of weeks back.

That win along with its current nine-game winning streak has the Noles projected as a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament according to ESPN’s Joe Lunardi.

If the Noles maintain their top spot among the ACC Conference they would almost assuredly be a No. 1 seed in the tournament.

The highest seed FSU basketball has had since seeding began in 1979 is a No. 3 seed. The Noles were three seeds in 1992, 1993 and 2012. The latter being the year FSU basketball defeated North Carolina to win the ACC Conference Tournament Championship.

The Noles have made the NCAA Tournament the last three consecutive years as No. 3 seed, No. 9 seed and No. 4 seed respectively. They lost in the second round, Elite Eight and Sweet 16 in those three seasons.

Thoughts

Leonard Hamilton has the Noles in the driver’s seat for the rest of the season. If they win out they will be ACC Conference regular-season champions for the first time ever. They do have remaining matchups with Louisville and Virginia who they’ve both already beaten.

A showdown with Duke at Cameron Indoor Stadium is another high-profile game that could determine where the Noles ultimately end up. FSU should be favorites to win almost all of its remaining games.

However, it’s the ACC and we’ve already seen large upsets so it’s not smart to count those chickens before they hatch.
