FSU football is busy preparing its Sun Bowl game next week while also continuing to assemble its new coaching staff for 2020.

FSU football head coach Mike Norvell is wasting no time assembling his coaching staff after being formally introduced on December 8th.

The pace at which he is assembling his staff paid dividends during the early signing period and I wrote how he was way ahead of the curve of the previous regime.

It’s a solid mixture of staff he has coached with in the past along with some coaches that were already here who can give great insight into how things were prior to Norvell’s arrival.

He’s already met with all of the players on the team, including seniors who’ll be leaving after the Sun Bowl.

The key is going to be Norvell listening to that information and deciding the best way to go about putting his fingerprint on the program.

Here’s a list of coaches he’s hired thus far:

Thoughts

As you can see Mike Norvell has been busy in his two weeks and change on the job. The only spots left to fill are a defensive backs coach, running backs coach and who’ll lead strength and conditioning.

The latter will most likely be filled by Josh Storms who was with Norvell at Memphis. He’s legit and earned the Master Strength and Conditioning Coach distinction by the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association (CSCCa). It’s the highest honor one can receive and is also certified by the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA).

There’s still no word on if tight end’s coach Telly Lockette will be retained, but Norvell indicated he played an integral role in recruiting success in the Early Signing Period.

Lockette could coach running backs possibly as he has strong recruiting ties in south Florida. The defensive backs coach could come from Memphis in the form of TJ Rushing.

Norvell has hired guys he’s had prior coaching stints with as well as coaches he’s never coached with previously. It’s a diverse coaching staff in race and in age and looks to be a huge upgrade on paper compared to the previous staff.

We’ll see how they work together as a unit once they are fully assembled, but so far so good.
