FSU football: Noles blow huge lead against Boise State in loss
By Kelvin Hunt
FSU football looked like two different teams against Boise State. A second half implosion cost the Noles a much-needed win.
FSU football looked like a totally different team on offense in the first quarter Saturday afternoon.
They jumped out to a 7-0 lead on a long Cam Akers touchdown run and then scored on their next possession in one play with a 75 yard touchdown pass to Tamorrion Terry.
The FSU defense always seemed somewhat shaky in the first half, allowing Boise State to march up and down the field but holding tough in the red zone.
FSU led 21-6 after the first quarter and it looked like the Noles were well on their way to dominating a Boise State team and silencing the doubters.
That’s why the teams play four quarters.
FSU looked to be losing momentum in the second quarter as Boise climbed back within striking distance with FSU holding a 31-19 lead.
The Noles were lucky a Boise touchdown was overturned due to a receiver illegally stepping out-of-bounds, forcing them to kick a field goal right before the half.
FSU was averaging nearly 11 ypp on offense with the Boise State offense averaging 5.55 ypp. However, Boise State ran 60 plays in the first half compared to just 33 for the Noles.
That was the story of the game.
The FSU offense was non-existent in the second half and the FSU defense could not get stops against Boise.
The Broncos had over 600 yards of total offense through three and a half quarters and held the ball for 35 mins compared to just 18 mins for the Noles.
FSU got the ball back down 36-31 with just under three minutes left in the game. However, two penalties killed the drive basically and Boise State ran out the clock with victory formation.
It’s inexcusable to be so inept on both sides of the ball. There were literally no adjustments by Harlon Barnett or Kendal Briles in the second half.
A true freshman threw for over 400 yards against this FSU secondary, and Boise beat FSU while turning the ball over three times.
The Noles will host Lousiana-Monroe next week.
