FSU football: ESPN all-time greats list disrespects Noles big time
By Kelvin Hunt
FSU football is one of the best college football programs of all time regardless of era. ESPN’s recent list is disrespectful.
I’m not sure what it is with ESPN and FSU football. For whatever reason they seem to always want to short change what the Noles have accomplished in such a short time frame.
In fact, they released a greatest football programs in the past 150 years recently. Why though?
What teams did 100 years ago doesn’t mean a hill of beans in my opinion, but here’s how they came to their conclusion:
"Basic modelDominance, 20% — number of national championshipsPeak strength, 20% — winning percentage for best 50 seasons in program historySince integration, 30% — winning percentage over the past 50 seasons (1969-2018)Early modern, 20% — winning percentage over the middle 50 seasons (1919-1968). Mostly pre-integration and included some games against non-college teamsPre-modern, 10% — winning percentage over the first 50 seasons (1869-1918) *mostly pre-standardization of current rules and many games against non-college teamsAdjustmentsNational championships below the FBS level count at 50%National championships before the poll era (1936) count at 50%Winning percentages when a team was not in Division I are reduced by 10%"
See, what’s the point in including all that old stuff if you have to grade it on a curve of sorts? They should have just went with the since integration era.
I would have used 30 percent since integration, 30 percent peak strength and 40 percent national championships.
ESPN has the Noles in the No. 19 spot with other schools like Mount Union, Tennessee, St. John’s, Princeton, North Dakota State, and Yale in front of them.
Not to mention FSU football has a better all-time winning percentage than the likes of Miami, Florida, LSU.
There’s no question FSU football deserves to be among the top 10 programs of all time. They’ve accomplished more than most of the programs ranked above them when it counts in about half the time.
Just look at that consistency folk. It’s amazing what he Noles have been able to accomplish in such a short time span considering both Florida and Miami were much more established as programs when FSU decided to play football.
Not to mention FSU became a national power by going on the road and playing all those top teams and beating the majority of them.
Let’s put some respect on the ‘Noles name here ESPN. It’s ridiculous for some of the programs to be listed on this list at all, much less top 20 and ahead of FSU.
