FSU baseball will again be taking part on the 64 team tournament after they were selected Monday to participate for the 42nd straight season.

After a rocky season that included their longtime skipper making history and a slump in the middle of the season that had some wondering if they would even make it into the postseason, the FSU baseball team will get a chance to join the fun of June after being selected on Monday for the NCAA Tournament’s field of 64 teams.

The announcement came shortly after noon that the Seminoles, with a record of 36-21 in the 40th and final season under the helm of longtime head coach Mike Martin, got one of the at large berths in the tournament that continues a streak dating back to the 1978 season – two seasons before Martin took over.

FSU baseball is scheduled to open up play on Friday in the Athens Regional, where the Seminoles will take on Florida Atlantic in their first game of the tournament this season.

The Seminoles started off the season with a 13-1 record that included Martin getting his milestone 2000th career win in a victory over Virginia Tech – a streak that was followed by losing 12 of their next 18 games that included being swept by rival Florida and dropping two out of three games on the road to rival Miami.

FSU baseball would finish the season with a 17-8 record over the final third of their regular season that started with nine wins in the first 10 games that included a sweep over a ranked Clemson team. The Noles split their games in the ACC Tournament last week, including an 11-0 win over a ranked N.C. State team.

Their opening game foe, the Owls, head into the tournament with a record of 40-19 after making it to the Conference USA title game this season. All time, the Noles have faced them nine times and have an 8-1 record – but the teams have not played since the 1998 season.

FSU baseball will be on the road for the first round of the tournament, something that hasn’t been done since the 2010 season. If the Seminoles do win the regional, they would face the winner of the Baton Rouge Regional featuring LSU, Arizona State, Southern Miss (who beat FAU for the C-USA title) and Stony Brook.

The Seminoles right now hope to do better than the 2018 NCAA Tournament, when they were upset in the first game by Samford before being eliminated in their second game on a walk-off homer from Mississippi State.
