Why FSU Baseball should not (but will) get NCAA berth in 2019

FSU baseball is going to be limping into the NCAA Tournament next weekend more than likely – but have they really earned one of the 64 coveted spots?

In just one day, the FSU baseball team will join hundreds of other college baseball teams from across the country waiting to hear the 64 team field for this year’s NCAA Tournament – and while the Seminoles know a game in Tallahassee won’t be happening, they know chances are decent they will be one of those teams selected.

Of course the Noles would be one of the teams picked to make it to the madness of June – after all, we are talking about a FSU baseball team who would be coming into the field with a record of 36-21 on the season and such big moments as…well, getting swept by Florida, losing two out of three to Jacksonville and getting no hit by Stetson.

If we’re all going to be honest with each other for a moment – and let us be grown ups for a moment and talk about this with some maturity among the garnet and gold family – the Seminoles have no business being one of the teams selected for the NCAA Tournament come Monday.

Now, in no way or shape or form should the 2019 season be considered a failure for the FSU baseball team – from longtime head coach Mike Martin getting win No. 2000 to sweeping a ranked Clemson team and other moments, there were plenty of bright spots for the Seminoles over the course of the season.

But take a look at the current resume for the Seminoles at this point: you have a team that is currently just over .600 in winning percentage this season to essentially say the Noles are barely a team that would go 6-4 over a 10 game span right now.

It’s a FSU baseball team that has lost four of their last five games that includes dropping their final series of the regular season to a Louisville team to go along with various disappointments during the year – getting shutout by a Pittsburgh team that finished with the worst record in the ACC this season, for example.

It was a season that was a failure for the hardcore fans of the program who are used to seasons with 50+ wins and deep runs to Omaha for the College World Series – and it’s a season that will end with a postseason trip simply because it’s the final run for Martin as coach.

College baseball doesn’t want Martin to leave the dugout after splitting their two games in the ACC tournament – they want him to say goodbye to the game after 40 magical seasons in a place like Nevada, Mississippi or even Connecticut at this rate.

The Seminoles have been to the tournament each season dating back to 1977 – a streak that should be ending this season but will continue on for the sake of No. 11. Whether that’s a good or bad thing hasn’t been decided, but at this point the sooner 2019 comes to an end the better for all involved.
