FSU football will be looking to redeem itself in 2019 after one of the worst seasons in history. I look at one simple thing to improve the team’s win total.

The main culprit behind FSU football and the worst seasons in four decades was the inability to score points.

FSU only averaged 22 points per game last season with six of its seven losses coming by two touchdowns or more.

Aside from the inability to score points was the inability to avoid turning the ball over to opposing teams.

The ‘Noles offense had 26 turnovers in 2018 with 13 fumbles lost and 13 interceptions thrown.

FSU’s offense being unable to move the ball much at all compounded the problem as 22 of the 26 turnovers resulted in opposing offenses getting the ball on FSU’s side of the field.

One has to think FSU’s turnover luck can’t possibly be as bad as it was last season with the fumbles. For instance, the FSU defense was only able to recover three fumbles all season.

Thoughts

The game of football is pretty simple and usually the team that makes the less mistakes will come out on top with all things being equal.

Even though FSU’s recruiting hasn’t been what it once was the past couple of years they should still be the most talented team on the field aside from a couple of games in 2019.

This year’s schedule is similar to the 2015 schedule. The Noles were not a great team that season, but they only turned the ball over 15 times en route to winning 10 games. It’s also the lowest amount of turnovers the FSU offense has had over the last decade.

It probably didn’t hurt to have Dalvin Cook and a decent offensive line though. I think the FSU defense was solid last year but was comprised by all those turnovers on short fields.

It yielded 79 points to opposing offenses from those turnovers which is 20 percent of the total amount of points surrendered during the season.

The turnovers during the Miami game were certainly the difference in the game aside from the officials blowing the call on the FSU touchdown.

So fix the turnover problem and FSU should give itself a much better shot at improving its record in 2019.
