FSU Baseball: Will the Noles continue 40 wins per year streak?
By Kelvin Hunt
FSU baseball took a two game series from Stetson for its seventh win in the last eight games. Could they really continue their 40 wins per year streak?
FSU baseball was in the midst of a huge slump about 10 games ago. The Noles had lost to rival Florida (again), lost a series against lowly Boston College, lost to Jacksonville, lost a series against lowly Miami and lost to Florida (again).
That’s a lot of losses against teams they had no business losing too. A lot of it was the Noles beating themselves with field errors (what’s new) and their bats going ice-cold.
In fact, the Noles were shut out three times during that stretch and held to two runs or less three other times.
However, a series sweep against Clemson was the genesis of this team seemingly beginning to believe in themselves again.
Those three wins and winning two of three games against Virginia while taking the last two games against Stetson have put the Noles in striking distance of reaching the magical number of 40 wins.
Admittedly, with this team there are no guarantees and they’ll need to make a run in the postseason to reach the mark.
However, they need just 14 more wins with 14 regular season games remaining:
- Wake Forest (3x)
- Pittsburgh (3x)
- Jacksonville
- Stetson
- Richmond (3x)
- Louisville (3x)
The likelihood of FSU baseball winning 14 straight with Louisville in the mix is improbable. However, they’ll have a decent shot of winning at least 10 games which would put them at 36 wins.
FSU baseball was included in the latest NCAA Baseball Field of 64 projections on Wednesday. If they go 10-4 or better to finish the season that should put them in postseason play, not to mention any wins they could get in the ACC Championship.
I have to admit I thought that streak of winning 40 or more games over 40 straight years was toast after losing against Miami and Boston College. A late surge in the season could keep that streak intact if they finish strong.
