FSU Football: No shortage of experienced QB targets for Noles
By Kelvin Hunt
FSU football will have one scholarship QB on the roster if Deondre Francois opts for the NFL Draft or decides to transfer.
FSU football fans have been wondering how the QB situation would shake out since the season ended. Would Deondre Francois return in 2019?
Would James Blackman be the starter or would former FSU commit Sam Howell enroll early and fight for the job?
I never felt the latter was realistic and it’s a mute point now that Howell will enroll at UNC. I talked about how Willie Taggart could handle the QB situation earlier.
What’s crazy is this seems to have been the perfect time to miss on their No.1 QB recruit. The number of QB’s opting to enter the transfer portal seems quite high with others potentially doing so well as. Here’s a quick list of potential targets:
- Jordan Travis (Louisville)
- Justin Fields (Georgia)
- Brandon Wimbush (Notre Dame)
- Tyree Jackson (Buffalo)
Thoughts
All of these quarterbacks could likely play in Kendal Briles’ offense. Justin Fields would be the No. 1 player to take in a perfect world, but I don’t see FSU football getting him to come to Tallahassee as much of the FSU ties with him were with the old regime.
Fields must be granted a waiver to be eligible to play in 2019 instead of sitting out a year.
Brandon Wimbush isn’t that great of a passer and Jordan Travis didn’t get much experience as a true freshman at Louisville. Wimbush could play immediately as he has already received his degree in Accounting from Notre Dame though I’m not sure he has any interest in FSU.
The last Notre Dame graduate transfer (Everett Golson) to enroll at FSU didn’t work as well as everyone thought.
Tyree Jackson is the MAC Player of the Year and has one year of eligibility left but could opt to put his name in the NFL Draft too.
So FSU has some options out there to give James Blackman some competition going into the 2019 season. They’ll also look to bring in at least one true freshman in this 2019 recruiting cycle too.
Who would you like to see Willie Taggart bring in at QB?
