FSU Football: 3 bright spots for Noles in the first half of 2018
By Kelvin Hunt
FSU football had a lot that went wrong in the first half of 2018, but were a few bright spots to glean from.
FSU football had what was perceived to be a lot of strengths going into the 2018 season.
They had an experienced quarterback, one of the best stable of running backs in the nation, a deep and talented defensive line and a talented group of wide receivers and defensive backs.
However, the season hasn’t gone like most thought it would despite those perceived advantages.
Injuries have been a huge factor among the offensive line and inexperience has shown at other positions like linebacker as we projected.
Nevertheless, there have been a few areas that have been bright spots among a slew of disappointments.
Punt Return
This area of special teams has been lacking for quite some time and been a weakness when that should never be the case. Sophomore D.J. Matthews has revitalized the position and averaging near 18 yards per return. He capped off the first half with a strong performance against Miami where he was ACC weekly honors as a specialist.
Wide Receivers
The wide receivers came into the year full of potential but unproven. However, there are five receivers with double-digit receptions on the season already. Tamorrion Terry has shown enough for me to believe he’ll be an impact player and Keith Gavin finally has shown consistency. Tre McKitty has shown he’s a better blocker than we’d thought he’d be and a true threat in the passing game.
Defensive Line
We thought the defensive line would be one of the best in the nation and they are proving that to be the case. The Noles are only allowing 2.76 yards per rush and one of the best at getting after the quarterback. Brian Burns and Marvin Wilson are beginning to play at the maximum potential and it’ll all be needed with the upcoming slate of games.
Thoughts
FSU football needs other units to step up their games. The secondary, particularly the safeties need to improve their games. The linebackers need to continue to emerge although they have been slightly better than I thought they’d be.
Of course Deondre Francois needs to be much better and the offensive line but those things go without saying.
If these bright spots continue and the Noles can get any improvements from the other units, there’s a solid chance FSU football can go bowling and continue their streak.
