FSU baseball will be in the hunt for a new head coach one year from now, and they have to hire someone currently not employed by the school.

It’s the news that everyone who follows the FSU baseball program knew was going to come someday: longtime head coach Mike Martin announcing last month that he will be spending one more season in the dugout before hanging up his lineup card and cleats for good after the 2019 season.

Immediately after the announcement, the school’s athletic director said that a nationwide search would take place to find the right person to wear the garnet and gold and lead the Seminoles inside Dick Howser Stadium starting with the 2020 season and beyond.

Since we are a helpful people here at Chop Chat, I thought that it would only be right to help Stan Wilcox out and find the person who is going to be the best fit for the FSU baseball program – so with that, here would be the best thing they could do.

Do not…I repeat, DO NOT…hire anyone who is current an assistant for Martin under any circumstances whatsoever.

In no way am I saying that Mike Martin Jr., Mike Bell or Clyde Keller are bad people who have done bad things during their time with FSU baseball. What I am saying is that now is the time for the program to truly have a clean start for the first time in four decades.

Anyone who worked under No. 11 is going to continue the style and the philosophy that he has carried through the years while leading the Seminoles. While that is a formula that has brought conference titles and 40+ win seasons, it’s also one that has built the program into one that falters at the biggest moments.

There is no way to hide the ‘0 for Omaha’ stigma that FSU baseball has – and while that does not define the program, it will be one of the first lines on its obituary until the Seminoles are able to hoist a national title in June.

You can always hire someone who has a tie to the program – someone like former Seminole star Doug Mientkiewicz, who has been building a career as a minor league manager but would bring a new style to the program he once dominated for.

Next: Mike Martin only gets final year due to Bowden fiasco

I have no doubt that FSU baseball will be led by someone that will continue the tradition of winning and hopefully bring that first crown if Martin can’t do it in his final season. I believe Wilcox will make the right hire – as long as it’s someone who won’t be a Martin clone.
