FSU baseball will be celebrating the 40th season with Mike Martin as head coach next season – and as it turns out, the final season for No. 11 in charge.

As it turns out, the FSU baseball team will see a familiar face leading the team onto the field of play for the 2019 season with the announcement Monday that Mike Martin will remain head coach of the team for the upcoming season.

However, it was the second part of the announcement that became more of the newsmaker – that upcoming campaign will be the final one that Martin will be in the leader of the Seminoles after what will be four decades as the head of the Noles.

Martin and the school announced Monday that the 2019 season will be the farewell tour for the longtime skipper and FSU graduate – the culmination of what has been four decades of winning in the regular season and heading to Omaha for the College World Series nearly 40 percent of the seasons he has been the head coach.

"“I’m glad that they want me to continue coaching next season and I thank all our former and current coaches, staff and most importantly our players for the consistent success of our baseball program,” Martin said in a statement provided by the Tallahassee Democrat.“His passion, dedication and demand for on-field success are as strong as they were the day he got the job, and I’m eager to watch what he and our team can accomplish next year,” athletic director Stan Wilcox added."

Martin will no doubt be celebrated for his accomplishments – becoming the all-time leader in wins for a college baseball coach while leading FSU baseball to 40 wins each season in charge along with countless ACC and Metro Conference title crowns and those trips to Omaha.

At the same time, he will also get some heat for the failure to win a title in the College World Series so far – twice losing in the title game in 1986 and 1999 – as well as questionable moves before getting there, including this year’s controversy in the regional round where FSU baseball was swept as a national seed.

FSU baseball will likely become a sentimental favorite to get that elusive first title next season, but will likely have to do so without key players that include Cal Raleigh, Rhett Aplin, Steven Wells, Tyler Holton and others who are either graduating or likely heading to the minor leagues after being drafted.
