FSU Baseball: Noles mourns death of incoming player in car crash
By Jason Parker
FSU baseball is dealing with the tragic death of junior college pitcher Zach Attianese, who was killed in a crash along with his father on Friday.
Over the history of the Florida State athletics program, the Seminoles have had to deal with the tragic deaths of players and coaches far too soon. Now, it is time for the FSU baseball team to mourn the loss of a player who had signed with the Noles and was prepared to join the team for the upcoming season.
Zach Attianese, who had previously played at North Carolina in 2017 before transferring to State College of Florida in Bradenton last season and later signing with FSU baseball for the 2019 season with two years of eligibility left, was killed in a car crash in Michigan that also took the life of his father.
According to the Detroit Free Press, the crash Friday night took place when the New Jersey native and his dad were traveling north toward the city and we’re struck by another vehicle.
FSU baseball head coach Mike Martin spoke with the Bridgewater (NJ) Courier News after the announcement of Attianese’s passing, extending thoughts and prayers from the program for the loss of Zach and his father, Jude.
"“Our prayers go out to Zach’s mom Natalie and his sisters, Ashley and Sabrina, as they endure this heartbreaking tragedy. Zach was a wonderful young man with a bright future that was sadly stripped away.”"
After being named the top scholar athlete in New Jersey as a high school senior, Attianese made nine relief appearance for the Tar Heels (none of which came in four games against the Seminoles). The 20-year-old lefty pitched in 15 games last season for the Manatees, going 10-3 with 94 strikeouts and just 18 walks.
With recent departures on the pitching staff, Attianese was expected to get plenty of chances to crack the FSU baseball starting rotation next season. Our deepest sympathies go out to his family at this time.
