Former FSU running back Chris Thompson overcame several injuries in college and continues to do the same in the NFL.

Chris Thompson only had one season with over 100 carries while at FSU and only played in 14 games combined his last two years in Tallahassee.

Thompson sustained a broken back his junior season and a torn ACL his senior season. However, prior to the injury his senior season, Thompson was on pace to become FSU’s first 1,000 yard rusher since Warwick Dunn.

What scouts saw on tape was enough for the Washington Redskins to draft him in the fifth round of the 2013 NFL Draft.

Unfortunately for Thompson, the injury bug struck again when Thompson suffered a torn labrum his rookie season.

He finally began to find his niche his third season, becoming a receiving threat out of the backfield for 49 receptions, two touchdowns and 349 receiving yards.

That production was enough for the Redskins to offer a two-year extension prior to the 2017 season which turned out to become Thompson’s best season until the injury bug struck again.

Thompson suffered a broken fibula that required surgery in November 2017, but it looks like Thompson is recovering nicely and should be able to return to training camp late next month.

Thoughts

Thompson is an incredible athlete who seems to get better after every major injury. He returned from the broken back his senior season to be on pace for his best season yet prior to the ACL injury ending his season.

How crazy is it for Thompson to break his leg, require surgery, and then be back on the field 7-8 months later?

The Redskins did draft LSU running back Derrius Guice with the 59th overall pick of the draft in April. However, that shouldn’t impact Thompson much if he resumes his role as a scatback/receiving option out of the backfield.

Here’s to hoping Chris Thompson can return to form and squeak out one more NFL contract extension since he’ll be 28 years old later this year.
