FSU Football Alums: Can Josh Sweat sneak into first round of NFL Draft?
By Jason Parker
FSU football will have at least one player taken in the first round of the NFL Draft – but could that number be higher after one player’s recent success?
Over the past few decades, FSU football fans have been fortunate to hear the names of former Seminole stars called early and often in the NFL Draft – with at least one former Nole being picked in the first round in six of the last eight drafts as part of a total of 35 players picked in the last five drafts dating back to 2013.
When the 2018 edition of the NFL Draft takes place in Arlington, Texas at the end of this month, the general consensus is that the FSU football program will get to brag about having another first round pick as virtually every mock draft – including here at Chop Chat – has safety Derwin James getting picked at some point in the first 32 picks.
But could he be joined by another former Seminoles star? According to a different mock draft, yes.
CBS Sports released their latest mock draft earlier in the week – and in edition to having James going No. 11 overall and staying in-state with the Miami Dolphins, they have another FSU alum getting picked before the end of the first round.
"31. New England Patriots – Josh Sweat, DE, Florida State. The Patriots place a high priority on athleticism, and Sweat had a Jadeveon Clowney-esque workout in Indianapolis. He’d be a three-down player in New England."
Now, I know that plenty of people have gone out of their way to praise Sweat for what he did at the combine in Indianapolis and what he did at the FSU football pro day late last month – but did he really go from someone who was a low round pick in January to someone getting picked by the five time Super Bowl champs?

It will be interesting to see if someone does take Sweat that high with what he has done since playing his last down for FSU in the regular season finale against Louisiana Monroe. Personally, I can see him being a second round pick on Day Two, but would be more than happy to have another Seminole taken early.
