Willie Taggart: Lots of teaching and learning going on at spring practice

FSU football head coach Willie Taggart spoke with media prior to Wednesdays practice.
Coach Willie Taggart spoke with media Wednesday as FSU looks to complete its first week of spring practice.
There were a lot of I wouldn’t say coach speak, but the statement we aren’t where we want to be was to be expected as most coaches will say that at this point in the spring or fall practice.
The good news is Taggart seems happy with where things are at this point. It’s still hard to get a read on him the way we could with the guy that’s in Texas right now.
However, that’ll come with time, but for now it looks like Taggart is having just as much fun as the players when it comes to preparing for spring practice.

Willie Taggart said there’s a lot of teaching and learning going on at spring practice.
The main thing to take away from the video is the FSU staff are looking to lay the foundation of what they’re trying to accomplish in all three phases of the game.
Establishing an identity so to speak. When it comes to the offense, getting the guys to understand how they want to attack opposing defenses at their weakest spots.
Getting the players to understand what their identity will be on defense and how that’ll impact opposing offenses. How special teams can affect both the offense and the defense with field position.
The biggest thing they’re trying to learn is playing with tempo on offense, and the defense having to respond to that by getting lined up correctly, etc.
Just understanding why they’re going at such a fast pace is important to learn as they discover how that impacts defenses in actual games.
The defense gets an understanding of why they need to get lined up as quickly as possible for the next play.

The great thing about spring practice right now is the players seem to be enjoying the process and have bought in to what Taggart and staff are selling. That’s half the battle for this coaching staff in itself.
