FSU athletics will be plenty busy today with several teams in action – so we take a moment to honor former Noles who have names for the holiday.

This Saturday will be more than just a day for some people both inside and out of the FSU Seminoles family – it’s March 17th, which means those of Irish ancestry will be celebrating the annual event known as St. Patrick’s Day (and those who are not Irish will act like they are for a day just so they can drink green beer and eat corned beef and cabbage…but more on that later).

The Noles have several teams who are spending the holiday at work – including the women’s basketball team opening there NCAA tournament run against Arkansas-Little Rock while the baseball team is actually hosting (of all teams) the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

At the same time, the FSU athletics family has had plenty of history when it comes to players having names related to the holiday. Okay, let’s be honest with each other – the Seminoles all time have had just one player named either Ireland, Shamrock or Dublin (a gymnast from the 1950’s named Dick Ireland).

But when it comes to the name Green (or Greene), the Noles have that on lock with 34 former players having those last names. With that, here are the top four all-time Greens / Greens to play for Florida State:

EG Green, FSU Football (1993-1997)

A three time All-ACC selection and All-American in 1997, the Fort Walton Beach native had two 1,000 yard seasons with the Seminoles and finished his career with 29 receiving touchdowns, including 11 in his senior season before spending three years with the Indianapolis Colts.

Hubert Green, FSU Golf (1966-1968)

The Alabama native was a two time All-American during his time with the Seminoles before going on to a lengthy professional career. He won 19 events during career, including the 1977 U.S. Open and the 1985 PGA Championship.

Lamont Green, FSU Football (1994-1998)

Finishing his career as the anchor of a Seminoles team who played for two national championships, the Miami native had 231 tackles, including 22 for a loss, to go along with 6.5 sacks at linebacker before spending one year with the Atlanta Falcons.

Rashad Greene, FSU Football (2011-2014)

The Albany, GA native, who played his high school football at Fort Lauderdale’s St. Thomas Aquanis High School, finished his career with the Seminoles with over 3,800 yards to go along with 29 receiving touchdowns and twice being named an All-American. He currently is on the roster of the Jacksonville Jaguars, but spent the 2017 season on injured reserve.

So, I guess when you re talking about FSU athletics, it is kind of easy being green if you are talking about the Seminoles.

Oh, and as I promised, a little interesting tidbit – click on this link for a story from WNBC-TV in New York City about how corned beef and cabbage is NOT actually an Irish tradition, but something done in America).
