FSU recruiting is finally on the board in the 2019 class under the new regime.

FSU recruiting closed the 2018 class on a high note under Willie Taggart and his new staff. The Noles were No. 11 in the country according to composite rankings.

The class was in salvage mode due to the former regime checking out earlier for the most part which forced Taggart and company to devote all of its resources to complete that class with the best players they could find.

That in turn put the new staff behind a bit when it came to developing relationships with the 2019 recruiting class. However, the new staff has spent a large amount of time evaluating talent and had a very successful junior day a few weeks ago.

FSU recruiting plans to be very selective in 2019, but their efforts are starting to pay off with the addition of the first 2019 commit in the Taggart era.

Three-star defensive back Travis Jay announced his commitment Tuesday and is the fifth player in the 2019 recruiting class that’s ranked No. 11 nationally.

Stars certainly matter, but they are largely inaccurate this time of year as players continue to grow and develop. Jay is at least a four-star caliber player at the moment and should receive a bump in his ranking as he attends more camps, etc.

He’s 6’0″ 180 pounds and hails from Madison County, Florida. If you’re concerned about his ranking, just look at the schools that have already offered him: Alabama, Clemson, Georgia, Auburn, Louisville, Miami, Purdue and Tennessee.

Any questions?

Thoughts

Jay will be an important recruit in this class and would give FSU recruiting two great cornerbacks along with Akeem Dent who’s the No. 1 ranked cornerback in the nation.

Some fans may have looked at 2019 rankings and saw that FSU hadn’t landed a player yet and started to get uneasy with other teams like Miami fielding 12 players in their class already.

Just remember this staff is going to be selective in who they want and will not take players if they don’t feel they are FSU quality. Plus, they were a little behind with having to spend so much time closing out the 2018 class.

Things should be picking up and they are doing a great job of getting players to visit, and in recruiting you always follow the visits.
