FSU Baseball 2018 Weekday Preview: vs. Kansas
By Jason Parker
Here’s a preview of FSU baseball and their next set of games during the 2018 baseball season.
Though there have been some moments where fans of the FSU baseball team have had to hold their breath, the Seminoles have been able to keep their heads above water and have avoided a loss for the first 11 games of the season – something they couldn’t say during their 2017 season that ended with a trip to Omaha.
Now, the Noles play two more games at home starting Monday against a team they haven’t faced all that much – before starting ACC play this weekend on the road followed by a trip to face their hated rivals that just happened to be the top team in the country right now.
Here’s our preview of this week’s game between the Seminoles and the Kansas Jayhawks.
The Last Time The ‘Noles Took The Field
The Seminoles hosted the UNC Asheville Bulldogs for a weekend series, a first against this foe in nearly a decade, and got the party started with a Friday night 9-2 victory. Cal Raliegh had a big opener as he came up with four RBIs while Drew Mendoza and Jackson Lueck added two each – more than enough for Cole Sands, who struck out eight Bulldogs over five innings.
On Saturday, the Noles used all their energy to keep the fans inside Dck Howser Stadium, as Mendoza was the hero of the day of the second time this season – coming up with a ninth inning, game winning RBI single that gave FSU baseball a 4-3 win.
Sunday, FSU watched as the Bulldogs tied the game at one in the fifth inning – but the Seminoles pulled away with three runs in the sixth to pace their way toward a 4-2 sweep. Austin Pollack threw a near gem on the mound, going six innings and striking out nine while giving up just two hits in the win.
Opponent Preview
The Kansas Jayhawks come to town with a 8-2 record on the season that includes five straight wins following a sweep of Texas Southern this past weekend. The men from Lawrence, KS took their first two series of the season against Murray State and Northwestern – and are currently batting .303 on the season while their pitching staff has a combined ERA of 3.70 and are holding opponents to a .216 batting average.

Interesting Fact
This week’s two game set will be the first time that FSU baseball has ever faced off against the Jayhawks – in fact, it will be one of just a handful of meeting between the Seminoles and a team from the Big 12 Conference. After playing Texas Tech twice last season for the first time, the Noles have played the 10 members of the conference just 25 combined times in the past 70 seasons.
