FSU football had a season to forget this season for a variety of reasons – and USA Today handed out a grade that would send the Noles to summer school.

With the 2017 season in the rearview mirror, all of us in the FSU football camp can finally admit to something that we kept to ourselves when others were heckling us during the previous campaign – this year was embarrassing and maybe the worst season the Seminoles have had to deal with in the last four decades.

It started with the injury to Deondre Francois in the opener…then, there was the loss to rival Miami with six seconds to go to end that winning streak…then, there was the beatdown at the hands of Boston College that required the Seminoles to win five of their last six games to finish with a bowl appearance and a winning season (both streaks longer than most of us have been alive).

I don’t mean to write all that to bum us all out, but the truth is the truth – and if FSU football could take Chief Osceola’s torch and burn this season to the ground, we would. It wouldn’t be much of a stretch to call this season a failure.

In fact, USA Today did just that with their rankings this week where all 130 teams in the FBS were given a grade based on their performance this season (exceeding or failing to meet preseason expectations, final result, etc.) – and the Seminoles came in with a below 2.0 graduation requirement grade of a D for the season, joining some “powerhouse programs”:

"Arkansas, Ball State, Charlotte, FLORIDA STATE, Illinois, Kansas, Kent State, North Carolina, Oregon State, Rice, San Jose State, Texas State"

Okay, anytime you are associated with the Jayhawks in football, you know you are doing something wrong. Ironically, just two teams were given filing grades with winning records – the Seminoles and the Texas A&M Aggies with all their fancy facilities and supportive administration.

Other grades of note to FSU football fans would be the fake national champs UCF with an A+, Clemson with an A and Miami with an A- and our good friends at Florida, where the 4-7 Gators got a F grade of the season. Sounds about right, don’t you think?
