FSU football routinely gets elite talent coming out high school. Former five-star recruit Josh Sweat declares for NFL Draft.

FSU football has lost another former five-star recruit off its roster to the NFL Draft. Defensive end Josh Sweat has declared for the NFL Draft and will skip FSU’s senior bowl against Southern Mississippi.

The story was first reported by Warchant.com.

Sweat led FSU with 5.5 sacks and 12.5 tackles for loss while being third on the team in total tackles with his junior season. All of those were improvements over his sophomore season aside from the number of sacks which were two less.

Sweat become a starter his freshman season at FSU after overcoming a terrible injury suffered in high school. He finishes his FSU career with 138 career tackles, 29 tackles for loss and 14.5 sacks

He’s being projected as a third or fourth round selection by most NFL mock drafts.

Thoughts

I agree with one of the tweets, it’s amazing Sweat was able to play the number of snaps he did as a true freshman. It’s quite possible he wasn’t 100 percent his first two years at FSU as he was injured last season prior to the Louisville game.

That’s probably one of the factors of him deciding to leave early for the draft. The flip side is DeMarcus Walker came back his senior season and improved his stock a ton to be drafted in the second round.

However, it’s quite possible Sweat didn’t feel like he’d be able to improve his draft stock that much and decided to go ahead and get paid. I can’t help but think what he could have been had he never suffered that injury in high school.
