FSU Football: Will ‘Noles cover the spread against Louisiana-Monroe?
By Kelvin Hunt
FSU football will need to beat Louisiana-Monroe Saturday to become bowl eligible. Can they cover the spread?
FSU football is favored to beat Louisiana-Monroe by 27 points Saturday with the over/under total at 65.5 points.
The ‘Noles have only covered the spread twice all season, which just so happened to be the last two games they played against Florida and Delaware State.
They opened at 5.5 favorites and closed at 3.5 point favorites against Florida, beating them 38-22 with the aid of two defensive touchdowns.
FSU football demolished lowly Delaware State where they were over fifty point favorites, winning 77-6.
According to S&P stats, Louisiana-Monroe has the No. 15 offense in the country which is better than the following schools: Alabama, Miami, NC State, Wake Forest, Clemson Syracuse and Duke.
However, their problem is defense that’s ranked No. 129 (out of 130) in the country. They can light up the scoreboard at times but can’t keep their opponents from doing it either.
FSU’s defense is ranked No. 35 according to S&P and No. 99 offensively by the same metric. It’s like both teams are total opposites of one another.
The Lowdown
FSU will be the second most talented defense they’ve faced all season behind Auburn. However, Auburn’s defense is ranked No. 5 in the country according to S&P.
Louisiana-Monroe runs an offense that’s wide open and with a quarterback that can run it and traditionally that’s given Charles Kelly fits to defend.
The biggest advantage FSU will enjoy in this game will be in the trenches and will likely look to run it down their throats as Auburn churned up 317 rushing yards against them a couple of weeks ago.
They also averaged 7.6 ypp on 72 plays for 552 yards. FSU plays at a slower pace than Auburn and has been less explosive all season. The total number by oddsmakers suggests a 45-20 type score.
FSU has been more opportunistic as of late on defense, and the offense has started putting it in the end zone instead of kicking field goals as of late. How will all the off the field stuff with Jimbo Fisher affect this team?
