FSU Football: Jimbo Fisher avoiding coaching questions is a bad look

Jimbo Fisher may or may not be coaching his final game for FSU football this Saturday – and the constant avoiding of the subject is making things worse.

In 2015 and 2016, the rumors flew for the last weeks of the college football season that Jimbo Fisher was going to be bolting FSU football for a former coaching stop, the LSU Tigers. This season, it’s another SEC West team who is being mentioned with the Seminoles leader as Texas A&M reportedly is trying to wave a lot of money Fisher’s way.

They are rumors that have been flying for much of the last month of the season as the Aggies strung along former coach Kevin Sumlin based on the misguided notion that they think they can compete with teams like Alabama, Auburn, LSU and the rest of the SEC. At the same time, with Florida State in the middle of their worst season in decades, some think Fisher might want a way out.

At the same time, Jimbo Fisher has been coy about what his future will hold and has treated the media like trash for doing their job and asking the questions they need to: will he be leaving the Seminoles.

Look, I’ve been in the sports media field for over a dozen years and know exactly WHY Fisher is treating the media like the enemy in the same vain as others like Nick Saban and Bill Belichick – it’s the sexy thing to act like anyone with a microphone is bad. The days of coaches like Bowden and Spurrier, who embraced the media and knew they could help them, are gone.

I also know that Fisher is not stupid when it comes to the subject – if he says something either way, it’s going to cost him a lot of money whether it shuns the Aggies or bolts Tallahassee. I get it, it’s common sense.

It’s also a bad look.

After Saturday’s win over Florida where he became the only Seminoles coach ever to win five games in a row over the Gators, Jimbo Fisher ripped into the media for continuously asking coaching questions and where he will be patrolling a sideline during the 2018 season. It had it’s funny moments, but it also just added gas to the fire about the subject.

I know that Fisher is not going to come out this week and go “Okay, during the 2018 season I’m heading to Texas / staying in Tallahassee”. However, whether he likes it or not, the more he tries to act annoyed by the questions, it’s just going to fuel the speculation from those inside the Florida State camp that the Noles will be in the business for a new coach next season.

Like most out there, I think FSU is a better job than Texas A&M when you take out the dynamic of the Aggies throwing a lot of oil money around (better chance of winning, easier road to the playoff, established reputation) and, despite all the criticism of how the season has gone, not once have we called for him to be fired or wanted Jimbo Fisher to leave.

However, until he actually says something one way or the other or decides to not go on the offense about things, Jimbo Fisher will continue to be asked the same question over and over.
