FSU Football being unranked has been a good thing under Jimbo Fisher

FSU football enters this weekend’s game unranked in both major polls for the first time in six seasons – and that’s not as bad as it sounds.

While many in FSU football nation were excited about the fact that the Seminoles actually got a win this past weekend over Wake Forest, voters in both major polls were unimpressed with the comeback win in the final minutes and both the AP and Coaches polls kept the Noles out of them entering the month of October.

That means that when the Seminoles host the rival Miami Hurricanes this Saturday, it will be the first time in six seasons that Florida State will enter a game unranked in either poll. It shows that the voters are done giving them a pass after losing to the top ranked team, Alabama, and a good N.C. State team after seeing that lackluster performance in Winston-Salem.

While it has been rare under head coach Jimbo Fisher to see FSU football without a number by their name, it also hasn’t exactly been a detriment to the program. In fact, you could say it has been a good thing of sorts.

Since Jimbo Fisher took over in 2010, the Seminoles have played 11 games where they have not been ranked in either poll. In each of those games, the Noles have come out on top:

"9/18/10 – vs. BYU (Won 34-10)9/25/10 – vs. Wake Forest (Won 31-0)10/2/10 – at Virginia (Won 34-14)11/13/10 – vs. Clemson (W 16-13)11/20/10 – at Maryland (Won 31-7)10/15/11 – at Duke (Won 41-16)10/22/11 – vs. Maryland (Won 41-16)10/29/11 – vs. N.C. State (Won 34-0)11/3/11 – at Boston College (Won 38-7)11/12/11 – vs. Miami (Won 23-19)11/26/11 – at Florida (Won 21-7)"

For the second straight season, the Seminoles will take on the Hurricanes as the lower ranked team as Miami currently sits No.13 in the AP poll and No. 12 by the coaches. Being ranked behind the ‘Canes has been a good thing lately as the last three times that situation has come up (2016, 2010, 2005) it has resulted in a FSU football win.

Next: FSU should reschedule game with La.-Monroe for December

It will also be the 13th time under Fisher that the Noles come into a game ranked lower than their opponent – with the Seminoles holding a 6-6 record in those games, including two wins last season over Michigan and Miami along with a loss to Clemson.
