ACC Football: SEC columnist takes shots at other Power Five conferences

The ACC is enjoying some of the best football being played in conference history – but one cocky SEC writer doesn’t have much respect for the league.

For over half a century, the ACC has been playing college football has the little brothers of the SEC. While that may not be the total truth, that is the way that most people have viewed it -especially those from that conference who won seven national titles in a row, but just four and a half crowns in the previous 26 seasons (a stat they like to forget).

Last season, the younger sibling got the best in their head to head games, going 10-4 against the conference with a four straight win by Florida State over rival Florida, Clemson’s biggest win ever over South Carolina and the Tigers defeating Alabama in the national title game being among those victories.

Since the end of the 2016 season, the ACC has not been shy about placing a claim as the best conference in college football. It’s a claim that has also been made by the Big Ten (a conference who lost all three of their New Years Six games), the SEC (who is still living off Alabama’s success) and the other two Power Five conferences, the Pac 12 and Big 12, for some reason.

WELL…some of those who cover the SEC are not happy at all that anyone would question what they believe is their birthright to be the best conference. Chris Wright, a columnist for Saturday Down South, recently posted a piece saying why the ACC and the other Power Five conferences not named the SEC might not make the College Football Playoff:

"For such big talk about being the unquestioned best conference in America, the ACC had just two teams in the Coaches preseason top 15. Both programs could be in serious trouble after the second Saturday of the season. An SEC sweep would take a sledgehammer to the penthouse suite they’re trying to build and call into question exactly how strong the league is this year, when it produces a 12-1 conference champion."

I get that Wright is paid by a pro-SEC website, but you would think he would actually do some research before posting such a piece. Don’t worry, I’ll take care of that for him and bill him later.

First, the ACC may only have two teams in the top 15 of the first coaches poll…but both those teams are ranked in the TOP FIVE. The SEC has four teams in the top 15, but after top ranked Crimson Tide, the next closest team is LSU ranked at No. 12 – seven spots below defending national champs Clemson.

Second, you’re going to take a shot at the ACC for having a 12-1 conference champ? Pop quiz, hotshot – name how many of the last eight SEC champs went undefeated. The answer? Two…2009 Alabama and 2010 Auburn. The other six have had at least one loss (2007 LSU had two) during the regular season while 2011 Alabama didn’t even win their own division.

The SEC has the worst fans when it comes to talking smack since the conference has become Alabama and the 13 dwarfs. During the run of seven titles, people forget that it wasn’t seven different champs – just four teams (Alabama, Auburn, Florida and LSU) won a crown while the other 10 teams played the role of hype men the whole time.

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again – the SEC and its fans are nothing more than a cult who needs to be done away with. When the ACC has a better record in games against them AGAIN and the conference beats them for a national title AGAIN, maybe they will shut up. Probably not, but one can only hope.
