FSU baseball lead the entire game in the College World Series opener but their own mistakes did them in and resulted in a 5-4 loss to LSU.

FSU baseball jumped on LSU early in the College World Series Opener, but the Noles couldn’t overcome their own mistakes and it cost them dearly. FSU will be kicking themselves over numerous missed opportunities in this game. The Noles simply handed one to LSU on Saturday night.

The loss puts FSU in a precarious position as they will now have to fight their way out of the losers bracket to try and make the championship series. FSU will now have to win four straight games to make the championship series, starting with Cal State Fullerton on Monday.

Review

FSU started the game off with a bang after Taylor Walls worked a lead off walk and Dylan Busby blasted a fastball to dead center for a two run home run. In the bottom half of the inning FSU made a crucial mistake. With two outs and a runner on first base, Tyler Holton recorded a strike out on a wild pitch, Cal Raleigh dropped the ball when he got to it, Tyler Holton didn’t cover the plate and LSU somehow scored from 1st on a strike out.

FSU would add to their lead when Busby came up with another big hit in the 3rd inning to stretch the lead to 3-1. FSU squandered a chance to score another run with a couple of strike outs. LSU cut into the FSU lead with an RBI single in the bottom of the 3rd inning to make it 3-2. FSU would tack on another run on a Quincy Nieporte infield single in the 5th inning to make it 4-2.

FSU continued to answer and keep the score close when Michael Papierski smoked a solo homer left field in the bottom of the 5th. The biggest blunder I have ever seen happened in the bottom of the 8th. LSU had a runner on first with one out after a ball that would have been routine for Taylor Walls ricocheted off of Holton’s glove for a single.

After that, LSU got a base hit to right, Steven Wells Jr let the ball go under his glove, an errant throw to 2nd allowed the runner to attempt to score, Dylan Busby gathered the ball and made the throw to home but Cal Raleigh dropped it and LSU tied the game. The next batter singled through the right side to take their first lead of the game.

FSU baseball has had their fair share of tough losses, but this one has to rank towards the top. Tyler Holton pitched well enough to win and was unlucky to take the loss. Holton’s line: 7.1 IP, 8 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 5 K’s.

Dylan Busby lead the way at the plate going 2-5 with three RBI. Taylor Walls was 1-2 with three walks and three runs scored.
