FSU football has had plenty of great wins under Jimbo Fisher – here’s a look at one of the 10 best during his time as head coach.
In seven seasons as the head coach for FSU football, Jimbo Fisher has led the Seminoles on the field and left it victorious 78 times. Those wins have involved victories over hated rivals, conference foes and national powers to go along with big bowl victories, conference titles and the third national title in program history.
While some have been easier than others, there have been dozens that have been memorable for fans of the Seminoles – whether it was who they beat, what it meant or even the time of the season it took place. Over his seven seasons in Tallahassee as the headman, Fisher has averaged more wins per season than any other coach in FSU football history – including the legendary Bobby Bowden.
So, which of the wins have been the best? Which are the ones that stand out above all the others when you look at the first years of the Jimbo Fisher era? We took a look at all the wins and ranked them up just for you. Without further ado, here’s another one of the top 10 wins for FSU football under Fisher.
No. 2 – October 18, 2014 vs. Notre Dame (W 31-27)
For FSU football, the 2014 season was an exercise in how the other half lives. After basically walking their way through most of the 2013 season en route to a national title, the following year had seen close wins over Oklahoma State and N.C. State to go along with a comeback overtime win over Clemson – all setting up for a top five showdown with the Fighting Irish as both teams had hopes of making the inaugural College Football Playoff.
In the first half, it looked like Notre Dame might get the best of the Seminoles as they had more than double FSU’s yard output and nearly doubled he amount of time they held onto the ball in the first 30 minutes. Even with a touchdown pass from Jameis Winston to Travis Rudolph and a Roberto Aguayo field goal, the Noles trailed by seven at the end of the first two quarters and had many people wondering if this was the end of what was the school’s longest win streak, dating back to the 2014 ACC Championship game and at 22 games entering this showdown.
In the second half, the Seminoles came alive and tied the game when Winston found Rashad Greene. Notre Dame would take the lead right back, but Karlos Williams would return from an injury the week before to get into the end zone to tie the game back at 24. The Fighting Irish opened the fourth quarter with a field goal, but Williams scored again to give FSU football the lead.
Notre Dame would have a final chance, scoring a touchdown with 13 seconds to go on the same play they scored their first touchdown – only to have it called back due to offensive pass interference. Jacob Pugh would intercept the next play and the Seminoles would hold on.

The rest of the season would prove to be just as tough, with comeback wins over Louisville, Florida and Miami to go along with hard fought wins over Virginia, Boston College and in the ACC Championship Game against Georgia Tech. Nonetheless, the Seminoles would go on to win 29 straight games during a streak that spanned three seasons and brought home a conference title each year and a national title in 2013.
