FSU football has had plenty of great wins under Jimbo Fisher – here’s a look at one of the 10 best during his time as head coach.
In seven seasons as the head coach for FSU football, Jimbo Fisher has led the Seminoles on the field and left it victorious 78 times. Those wins have involved victories over hated rivals, conference foes and national powers to go along with big bowl victories, conference titles and the third national title in program history.
While some have been easier than others, there have been dozens that have been memorable for fans of the Seminoles – whether it was who they beat, what it meant or even the time of the season it took place. So, which of the wins have been the best? Which are the ones that stand out above all the others when you look at the first years of the Jimbo Fisher era? We took a look at all the wins and ranked them up just for you. Without further ado, here’s another one of the top 10 wins for FSU football under Fisher.
No. 6 – September 20, 2014 vs. Clemson (W 23-17 in Overtime)
After a blowout win the season before on the road behind the arm of then freshman Jameis Winston, the Seminoles entered this matchup as the defending national champs. The first two wins hadn’t come as easy as the ones just a season before – and this one wouldn’t be even tougher as Winston was suspended for this Top 25 showdown, putting all the pressure on Sean Maguire to keep FSU football’s win streak alive.
The Noles got on the board first with a 50-yard field goal from Roberto Aguayo before the Tigers turned over their offense to a freshman quarterback named Deshaun Watson. Clemson would score 10 unanswered points in the second quarter, as Maguire couldn’t lead the Seminoles’ offense to anything. It wasn’t until the third quarter when Florida State would enter the end zone thanks to Mario Pender, but Clemson would strike back with a touchdown to start the final frame.
Then, a wild set of events took place that made this an instant classic. Maguire connected with Rashad Greene for a wild 74-yard touchdown to tie the game at 17. The joy was short lived when Maguire threw an interception with just over two minutes to go that set Clemson up for a game winning score – until Eddie Goldman stripped the Tigers runner and FSU recovered, setting up overtime. In the extra frame, it was the defense that stopped Clemson on fourth down and short to get the ball back.

Two runs from Karlos Williams, including a 12 yard run around the left side, gave FSU football a hard fought win to continue the nation’s longest win streak at the time and keep the Seminoles on track for a third straight ACC Championship and a chance to repeat as national champs. The 2014 season was one that was a lot harder than the year before, and the win over Clemson was just another example of that.
