FSU baseball slugged their way towards another weekend series sweep, this time it was against the Oakland University Golden Grizzlies.

FSU baseball had some struggles on the mound and in the field against Oakland University, but their bats were able to overcome those struggles in route to a three game sweep. FSU’s starting pitching had been stellar so far in 2017 but that wasn’t the case in two of their three games against Oakland.

FSU’s offense enjoyed their time at the park this weekend as they scored a total of 44 runs in three games. Fridays game was full of offense as FSU won 18-10. Saturday was a comfortable 12-1 victory behind another great performance by Tyler Holton. And on Sunday FSU overcame three errors to win 14-6 and improve the Noles record to 8-2.

Friday

It was a sluggish start to the weekend for FSU baseball as they found themselves down 7-1 to one-win Oakland University through four innings. Starting pitcher Cole Sands had a rough outing with a line of three innings pitched, seven hits, three earned runs, two walks and two strikeouts. Sands’ defense didn’t do him any favors as the Noles committed three errors on the night.

FSU’s offense was stagnant through the first three frames on Friday before they rallied to score 18 runs in the final six innings. FSU blew the game open behind Quincy Nieporte’s second grand slam in as many weeks in the bottom of the 7th, FSU put up eight runs total in the frame. Jackson Lueck led the way with three hits, Lueck and Nieporte had 4 RBI apiece.

Saturday

Saturday at Dick Howser Stadium was all about Tyler Holton as he continued his impressive start to the season in route to a 12-1 victory. Holton finished with a line of 6 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 13 K, 0 BB. The 13 K’s were a new career high for Holton, topping the 11 K’s he recorded the week before against Samford. Through three starts, Holton is 3-0 with an era of 0.47, totaling 19 innings allowing seven hits and one earned run while recording 32 K’s to just four walks.

Taylor Walls had a nice day at the plate; going 1-3 while picking up three RBI. Dylan Busby improved upon his recent performances getting two hits on Saturday and two RBI as well. FSU outhit Oakland 11-5 on the day.

Sunday

Much like Friday, FSU baseball found themselves down early on Sunday. Through the top of the third the Noles were down 3-1. From there they were able to put together a few big innings on their way to a 14-6 victory and a series sweep. Freshman pitcher Drew Parrish went four innings and allowed four earned run on seven hits.

Jim Voyles came in to pitch three innings of solid relief as he allowed just two hits and zero earned runs. It wasn’t a save situation for Drew Carlton but he did get an inning of work in, allowing one hit and zero runs.

Freshman Tyler Daughtry continues to impress when given the opportunity. On Sunday Daughtry was 3-3 with three RBI, and three runs to go along with two walks. Quincy Nieporte continued to display his power as he hit his second home run of the weekend and fourth of the season. Dylan Busby had his best game of the year going 3-4 with three RBI, and scoring four runs.

This week FSU will travel to UCF for a two game series. Be on the lookout for our series preview on Tuesday.
