Will FSU newest staff acquisitions have time to make an impact in transfer portal?

Might have a trick or two up their sleeve

Florida State has finally made some much-needed acquisitions to its back office with two hires. John Garrett, formerly of FSU and Duke, will replace Derrick Yray as the General Manager and Taylor Edwards as the Executive Director of Player Acquisitions from the Miami Hurricanes.

Some media were painting narratives that FSU wouldn’t have these hires in place before the transfer portal officially opened on January 2nd. Now that they are in place, the biggest question is whether they will have enough time to make an impact with portal acquisitions.

It’s fair to say many deals have already been made with players who have announced intentions to enter the portal. However, it’s not like Garrett and Edwards were not in the business and don’t have relationships with agents and players. Garrett was at FSU before and is familiar with how things work. Edwards was at Miami, and they arguably use the transfer portal more than FSU.

There are teams playing in bowl games and in the College Football Playoff who’ll have players enter the portal once those games finish.

I’m sure the FSU coaching staff had a list of positions where they assessed they needed the most help and needed improvement.

The challenge will be identifying players who don’t have deals in place, while learning how much they can allocate per position.

FSU attracted some quality players after going 2-10, so they should have some success in the portal after showing some improvement this year. The key will be who they can get at quarterback, offensive line, and pass rusher. They’ll have 5-6 days to get to work, and I can’t wait to see if they can work any magic.
