Florida State may have had the week off to recover, but the rest of the ACC battled it out on the gridiron, with plenty of shocking results. Virginia Tech managed to defeat Clemson, while Syracuse took down North Carolina in overtime. There has been a lot of shakeup in the conference this season, which has made predicting which team will perform well each week increasingly difficult.
There are only a handful of games left in the 2026 season before select teams move into the bowl calendar, and the Seminoles still have plenty of work to do. With a 3-4 record, Florida State has floated around the middle of the conference all season long, but that needs to improve to end the current bowl drought.
After another exciting week of action in the ACC, it is time for the Week 8 ACC power rankings. Some teams managed to climb after impressing on the field, while others continued to drop without a real sign of improvement this year.
17. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (2-5) - Last Week: 15
A once-promising win over Duke appears to have offered nothing but false hope, as the Yellow Jackets have lost the last two games against Virginia Tech and Boston College.
16. Syracuse Orange (3-4) - Last Week: 17
The thrilling upset win over North Carolina saved Syracuse from the bottom spot, but the Orange still have plenty of concerns that need to be addressed. Is the win a sign of bigger things to come, or just another flash of what could have been?
15. California Golden Bears (3-5) - Last Week: 11
The Golden Bears once looked like a team that could push to the top of the ACC, but nothing, and I mean nothing, has been working for a team with one of the worst offenses and defenses in the conference.
14. Stanford Cardinal (4-4) - Last Week: 16
Stanford may still have one of the worst defenses in the country, but Davis Warren has had some big games this season after a difficult 2024 season with Michigan. Beating NC State is a step in the right direction, but Elon is the only team with a winning record that Stanford has outplayed this season.
13. NC State Wolfpack (3-4) - Last Week: 13
The Wolfpack have had a few positive moments this season, but when it comes to executing flawlessly when needed, the team is its own worst enemy.
12. Virginia Cavaliers (4-4) - Last Week: 10
Since losing to Florida State in Week 5, the Virginia offense has looked broken, and the team has not been able to replicate what it did best through the first four weeks of the season. With back-to-back losses to SMU and Duke, the Cavaliers could be staring down a third, as Wake Forest will be hosting this weekend.
11. Boston College Eagles (4-3) - Last Week: 14
After dominating Georgia Tech, Boston College may genuinely have a more capable team than many originally thought, especially for the pricetag of roughly $15 million. The defense has been solid all season; now the Eagles just need a more consistent output on offense to match.
10. Florida State Seminoles (3-4) - Last Week: 12
It may have been a bye week for Florida State, but there are two main reasons why this team moved up two spots in the rankings without playing. First, the loss to Miami, while unfortunate, was also productive because it proved this current team and coaching staff can compete against top programs on the field, but now the question is who has been responsible for producing that competitiveness.
Second, and perhaps most important moving forward, is that the ACC has been a complete mess this season aside from the likes of Wake Forest and Miami. SMU nearly lost to Florida State by beating themselves, and formerly competitive teams like California and Virginia have fallen off the map. Every team, aside from Miami, has lost, and many have lost big this season.
Florida State is one of those teams as well, putting in a big win over Virginia only to respond with a disastrous loss to Louisville. However, the Seminoles can take advantage of this and perhaps still finish in a position to receive a bowl game due to the fact that the conference as a whole has been inconsistent.
Clemson is going to present a very important test in Week 9 for Florida State, with a chance to snap the losing streak and finally get back to winning ways.
9. North Carolina Tar Heels (4-3) - Last Week: 7
The Tar Heels finally look like the program is starting to turn things around with far more consistent results, but when can they become a team that is expected to win more games?
8. Clemson Tigers (4-3) - Last Week: 6
The Tigers have had an increasingly strange season on offense that continues to get worse each week. Quarterback play has been inconsistent, the rushing offense has been nonexistent at times, but the defense has looked much better when playing against unranked teams.
7. Pittsburgh Panthers (5-3) - Last Week: 5
After starting quarterback Mason Heintschel went down with a season-ending injury, it has been all downhill for the Panthers. The team has lost its edge, and whether it is due to the injury or the coaching is to be seen.
6. Duke Blue Devils (5-2) - Last Week: 8
After a dominant start right out of the gates, Duke has been struggling to stay afloat, and the chances of catching Miami seem incredibly distant now.
5. Louisville Cardinals (4-3) - Last Week: 9
A lot can change in a week, even without playing, and when the rest of the ACC beats up on each other, it gives Louisville a chance to climb.
4. Virginia Tech Hokies (6-2) - Last Week: 4
Penn State must really feel ridiculous at this point with Iowa State 2.0 falling apart, and James Franklin smiling away in the ACC. Virginia Tech might have the only offense in the conference that can keep up with Miami this season.
3. SMU Mustangs (6-1) - Last Week: 3
Somehow, someway, SMU continues to find a way to win games, and given how chaotic the ACC is at this point, the Mustangs are taking advantage.
2. Wake Forest Demon Deacons (6-1) - Last Week: 2
Losing to Miami is nothing to be ashamed about, and given how Wake Forest has been playing on offense this season, the two teams could meet again. Gio Lopez has 23 total touchdowns this season, which is three shy of a new career-high.
1. Miami Hurricanes (7-0) - Last Week: 1
Despite a few scares this season, it has been a dominant run for the Hurricanes with no true challengers.
