Veteran linebacker DJ Lundy is out for the remainder of the 2024 season
Florida State's 2024 football season has been a disaster, with losses to Georgia Tech, Boston College, Memphis, SMU, and Clemson. The Seminoles are entering a bye week before they take on the 5-1 Duke Blue Devils on Friday night.
The Seminoles were expected to be a very productive squad in 2024 after accomplishing an undefeated regular season and a conference championship in 2023. However, the coaching staff is quickly learning that the contributors that they had from last year meant a lot to this university.
The bad news has continued to follow Florida State as they have had injuries to pieces such as DJ Uiagalelei, Roydell Williams, Jaylin Lucas, and Richie Leonard IV. The list got bigger on Wednesday afternoon as head football coach Mike Norvell announced that redshirt senior linebacker DJ Lundy is out for the remainder of the season with an undisclosed injury.
Lundy was a player who had been with the program for the entirety of his career as he was a former three-star prospect in Norvell's first recruiting class in 2020. However, the biggest concern for him was his consistency and coverage in space as a linebacker.
Florida State needed Lundy to step up hugely as they were having to replace the likes of Kalen DeLoach and Tatum Bethune, who both graduated and went to the NFL. They were top tacklers for the defense in 2023.
Lundy announced that he was entering the transfer portal this offseason and even committed to the Colorado Buffaloes. However, Florida State was able to get him to back off of his pledge and land back with the Seminoles.
It was thought to be a big win for Florida State as they look to have familiarity in a position room with no experience. With Lundy being out for the rest of 2024, I expect linebackers such as Blake Nichelson, Cam Riley, Justin Cryer, and Omar Graham Jr. to step up in a meaningful way.
I hope that linebackers coach Randy Shannon has an answer for the position for the rest of the season.
