Florida State football is heading to the practice field once again on Saturday for an opportunity to get better. The program will have to continue to showcase growth after its 5-7 disaster last season. The downside is that they will not have a spring game once again, which has frustrated the fan base.
Head coach Mike Norvell is walking on thin ice with his job security, and something needs to change quickly in Tallahassee to ensure that he stays around. Even though the administration decided to retain him for the 2026 season, it could be the nail in the coffin if things go poorly.
Norvell did acquire talent to the roster via the high school recruiting ranks and the transfer portal, which should bring life to the program. However, the fan base asks whether it is too late.
True freshmen Devin Carter and Jasen Lopez could make their presence known
Earlier this week, head coach Mike Norvell was asked if any youngsters could potentially have a Desir Twins type of impact in their true freshman campaign. He immediately brought up wide receivers Devin Carter and Jasen Lopez.
Florida State returned the trio of Duce Robinson, Micahi Danzy, and Jayvan Boggs, which is amazing for an offense looking to find a groove. However, the Seminoles need more than just three pass catchers to make this offense effective.
Carter and Lopez were highly-touted prospects that many schools wanted. Carter's father (Dexter) played at Florida State and was a very dynamic player, while Lopez didn't have the legacy impact, but he did have over 1,000 receiving yards in each of his four seasons of high school at Chaminade-Madonna Prep.
These are true freshmen, and we already saw what it meant to have to rely on their services. Just last year, Jayvan Boggs was supposed to be advertised as something special, but injuries held him back from his potential.
The dynamic duo has to continue their dominance in practice, but the elephant in the room is the quarterback competition, which is between veteran Ashton Daniels and redshirt freshman Kevin Sperry.
