Florida State head football coach Mike Norvell will have at least one coaching change on his 2026 staff since Patrick Surtain won’t return to coach the defensive backs next year. The news of Patrick Surtain dropping before any of the other remaining guys didn’t sit well with the fan base.

Surtain didn’t deserve to be first, but we wrote about why it’s likely his contract wasn’t renewed, as it expired in a month or so.

FSU running back coach David Johnson is getting interest from Arkansas for the same position, so that’s another change that could occur.

If Johnson stays or goes, it’s not life or death. He’s been decent, but FSU probably needs more from its recruiting coordinator. The running back position doesn't require a ton of coaching and it's usually where your better recruiter gets stashed. Johnson has landed some blue-chip guys, but nobody game-changing. Ousmane Kromah signing with the 2025 recruiting class was a big win, but that involved way more factors than Johnson.

There are three coaches remaining on the staff whom Mike Norvell needs to make a change as soon as possible.
