FSU FOOTBALL
Florida State did not have the performance that it wanted against the likes of the arch-rival Miami Hurricanes on Saturday night as they lost by a score of 28-22. The score wasn't as close as it looked, as the Seminoles trailed 28-3 in the fourth quarter.
It is difficult to draw positives from what transpired, as a portion of the fan base thought that Florida State would bounce back nicely after its first loss of the season against Virginia.
However, that was not the case, as it became apparent that Florida State had flaws that it needed to work out. The offense was a problem for the Seminoles, as the pass rush from Miami continued to mount. The offensive line held up for Florida State, though, as quarterback Thomas Castellanos had time to throw.
PASS CATCHERS
The offense wasn't perfect against Miami, but quarterback Thomas Castellanos continued to battle in the fourth quarter and continued to battle through the levels of adversity.
Nonetheless, I was worried about Castellanos not being able to find a second receiving option. Former USC transfer Duce Robinson has been living up to the billing, but it was expected since he is listed at 6'6". However, former Tennessee pass catcher Squirrel White was supposed to be the number two. Then, former four-star prospect Jayvan Boggs was thought to be the third.
Robinson was the only sure thing at this time. However, it could be that sophomore wide receiver Lawayne McCoy is starting to find his rhythm after being injured in the preseason. McCoy used to be a talented playmaker from Miami, Florida, whom the coaching staff loves to mention.
McCoy made headlines this offseason, as head football coach Mike Norvell referred to him as a "tier-one wide receiver". This is great praise for a pass catcher that hasn't done too much in Tallahassee yet. However, McCoy started to come into his own against Miami, where he recorded three receptions for 39 yards and one touchdown.
Hopefully, this is a chance that McCoy can use to develop himself this weekend against Pittsburgh.
