The Florida State Seminoles have dropped two straight games after a 50-36 loss to Alabama in Week 3. Despite jumping out to a 21-6 lead, they couldn't hold on and lost running back Sam Singleton Jr. in the process.
Head coach Mike Norvell spoke to the media on Monday and revealed that Singleton Jr. will be sidelined for an extended period of time due to a leg injury. He got hurt on a 65-yard catch-and-run in the second half.
While Norvell thinks he will be back at some point this season, his absence opens the door for fellow running back Quintrevion Wisner, who could be lined up for more snaps.
Tre Wisner suddenly has much bigger role after Singleton Jr.'s injury
Wisner is proven veteran a transfer from Texas, but he dealt with injuries in fall camp that set him back. Seminoles offensive coordinator Tim Harris Jr. also spoke and said Wisner has been "waiting in the wings for more opportunities."
This seems like the perfect setup for the transfer running back to make an impact on Florida State's offense. And that's noteworthy after FSU reportedly gave Wisner $650,000 in NIL this offseason to close the deal. That's not a low price and shows that Florida State believed he could make plays for them this season.
Through three games, that hasn't been the case. He's logged five carries for 34 yards and has been on the sideline for the bulk of the snaps. Meanwhile, Singleton Jr. has compiled 20 carries for 73 yards. As a pass catcher, he has the second-most receiving yards on the team (162) and a team-high two receiving scores with eight catches.
Singleton Jr. certainly had a nice role in the backfield for the Seminoles, so with those plays/snaps up for grabs, this is a great chance for the Seminoles to get a return on their investment in Wisner.
Harris Jr. called him a veteran player, and for good reason, as he's a senior after spending three years with the Texas Longhorns. During his tenure there, he had 369 carries for 1,734 rushing yards and nine rushing touchdowns. As a receiver, he added 66 catches for 457 yards and another two touchdowns.
His experience will give the staff more faith that they can lean on him and put more on his plate as a player. He has shown he can make plays but hasn't done so in a Florida State uniform. This is the time to showcase that, and he will have a bar to reach.
Singleton Jr. has created some chunk plays for this offense, and Florida State will need to replace that. Ousmane Kromah is the lead back, but when they need to give him a rest, look for Wisner to be the first off the bench.
Going forward, the Seminoles will need everyone to bring their best foot forward so they can get back on track and in the win column. Hopefully, Wisner can help in that department, with him poised to get more playing time in the coming weeks.
