FSU FOOTBALL TRANSFERS
Florida State head football coach Mike Norvell has been known to acquire talented transfers via the portal, but the 2024 season was a reset in terms of perception as the Seminoles managed to have a 2-10 record.
Coach Norvell had individuals believe that the Seminoles only recruited transfers instead of homegrown talent. As we learned with Dabo Swinney and Clemson's recent struggles, a program cannot rely strictly on high schoolers. There has to be a mixture of transfers and recruits.
The Seminoles added forty-four new transfers and recruits to the roster this past offseason. Quarterback Thomas Castellanos headlines the list of transfers, and he gave the Crimson Tide everything that they could handle in Week 1.
RB GAVIN SAWCHUK
Castellanos might get all the attention, but running back Gavin Sawchuk is someone that the coaching staff values as a player in this offense. Sawchuk recorded 744 yards and nine touchdowns in 2023, but he dealt with injuries in 2024, where he only had 128 yards and one touchdown.
The former Oklahoma transfer was thought to be overshadowed by true freshman phenom Ousmane Kromah, whom the Seminoles battled for over the likes of Georgia and Auburn. Even though East Texas A&M wasn't a juggernaut, he completed eleven attempts for 97 yards and two touchdowns.
Sawchuk could be getting into a rhythm heading into conference play. Florida State takes on the Virginia Cavaliers tonight at 7 PM EST on ESPN.
Offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn focuses on the ability to run the football. Even though the fan base is worried about the game, one way to ease their concerns is to establish the run.
Sawchuk brings a physicality to the offense when he runs the football. Virginia's defense allows 100.2 rushing yards per game (31st in the FBS). However, they haven't faced an offense that relies heavily on building the run around their game plan. North Carolina State running back Hollywood Smothers had 17 carries for 140 yards and two touchdowns when they played the Cavaliers.
As long as Florida State doesn't get too happy with rotating their back, this could be an opportunity for Sawchuk to shine massively.
