Florida State football defeated the California Golden Bears by a score of 14-9 in a grind-it-out contest in the friendly confines of Doak Campbell Stadium.

The Seminoles struggled to begin the year as they had losses to Georgia Tech, Boston College, and Memphis. This squad is trying to find consistency after having so much success a season ago when they had an undefeated regular season and a conference championship.

This team is far from perfect, and I realize this could be a forgettable campaign as the schedule only gets harder from here. However, there are players on the defensive unit that are playing very well. One of those is redshirt freshman cornerback Edwin Joseph.

Joseph was referred to as a heavy special teams contributor with his big hits. With that being said, he was due to an elevated role in his play in practice. The former four-star prospect continues to showcase his heart and dedication to the university and even stated during practice to the players: "If you don't want to be here no more, go home!"

The former Chaminade-Madonna Prep standout finished the contest with two total tackles, an interception, and 0.5 sacks. Each play that he made was very impactful. When California was driving the football down the field, he was able to read the route and intercept the pass.

Then, with the game on the line, California had the football on the 23-yard line in a 4th down and 16 when they were down by five points, Joseph was rewarded with a half-sack to seal the deal for the Seminoles.

Obviously, there are going to be bumps and bruises by Joseph given that he is so young. However, it is encouraging to see the effort and dedication that he plays with. After the game, defensive tackle Joshua Farmer gave the younger high praise as he said that Joseph reminded him of former defensive back Jammie Robinson.

While I have no clue if Joseph can live up to Robinson's statistics, where he recorded 183 tackles (12 for loss)and five interceptions during his two-year playing career with the Seminoles. However, the hard work that Joseph has shown could be a sign of great things to come for the redshirt freshman.
