Florida State football will be conducting its fifth fall practice today. The Seminoles are hungry to prove the doubters wrong after the College Football Playoff excluded them from an opportunity to compete for a national championship.

However, it will be an uphill battle. Florida State will welcome several newcomers via the recruiting trail and transfer portal after the Seminoles lost contributors from last year's squad to graduation, from the NFL, and the transfer portal.

The secondary is led by defensive backs coach Patrick Surtain Sr. as he will have his hands full as he looks to turn the page on a new era with cornerbacks Jarrian Jones and Renardo Green as well as safety Akeem Dent heading to the NFL.

That is unfortunately the landscape of college football nowadays. Plus, that is the territory that Florida State is in now with having success on the football field again.

The Seminoles return two sensational cornerbacks on the defensive side of the football with Azareye'h Thomas and Fentrell Cypress II. It seems like everyone at this point knows how I feel about Thomas, I believe that he will be a first-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.

The Niceville native has quiet confidence in himself after the 2023 season where he was a reserve at the position but had ten pass breakups. This is his moment to shine. Thomas isn't one of those players that trash-talks a lot. He goes in and handles his business. Media members who attend practice discuss how he gives opposing wide receivers no space to get off their releases.

Let's not forget about senior Fentrell Cypress II. He was a starting cornerback. While he did not have an All-American caliber season, he still made an impact. Cypress II was the number one cornerback transfer prospect coming from Virginia last offseason. The Seminoles' coaching staff had a ton of confidence in Cypress II's abilities.

As expected, it took Cypress II time to get used to the defensive scheme. The Seminoles run a ton of man coverage in their defense. During the spring and now in the fall, the switch seems to be turned on for the former Virginia transfer as he has recorded two interceptions through four practices as he is beginning to find his groove.

If Florida State has a formidable cornerback unit with Azareye'h Thomas and Fentrell Cypress II on the outside, it could get scary. The Seminoles just need their defensive line to generate enough pressure where the secondary isn't covering for long periods.

That is so exciting to see Cypress II getting into a rhythm during fall camp.
