The Seminoles' defensive line should have a field day versus California's offense
Florida State has the California Golden Bears coming into Tallahassee this Saturday at 7 PM EST on ESPN2. The Seminoles have struggled over the past couple of weeks with losses to Georgia Tech, Boston College, and Memphis. It has been a forgettable stretch for the fan base.
One positive aspect has been the improvement, heart, and dedication of the Seminoles' defensive unit. However, the defensive line has been underwhelming overall. Coming into the season, we even heard ESPN's Pete Thamel stating that he heard NFL scouts talking about Florida State having one of the best defensive line units in the country.
Florida State had to replace the likes of Jared Verse, Braden Fiske, and Fabien Lovett Sr. (fans wish that they had them in garnet and gold again) this offseason after they all went to the NFL.
The Seminoles only have six sacks through three games this season. Can you guess who is the leading sack leader?
You guess it... reserve defensive tackle Daniel Lyons!
That is the life of the Seminoles' defensive unit right now. One aspect that I am curious about is the fact that California is 113th in the FBS where they allow three sacks per game.
This would be a perfect opportunity for players such as Patrick Payton, Sione Lolohea, and Marvin Jones Jr. I would be super excited if they could get home to California quarterback Fernando Mendoza, who has completed 61 of his 87 passes (70.1%) for 589 yards with five touchdowns and one interception.
Mendoza is not a rushing threat for this offense (please, Mendoza... don't prove me wrong), where he has accumulated nineteen carries for 12 rushing yards and one touchdown. The "statue" should give the Seminoles' defensive line enough confidence to get into the backfield.
This should be a productive day for the defensive line to live up to their high expectations.
