Mike Norvell provides updates about OL Jeremiah Byers and Robert Scott Jr.
Florida State football suffered losses to Georgia Tech, Boston College, and Memphis in the early portion of the 2024 season. However, on Saturday night, they were able to defeat California by a score of 14-9 in the friendly confines of Doak Campbell Stadium.
The offensive side of the football had challenges versus the Golden Bears, where they have been dealing with a variety of injuries as well as inconsistencies. The offensive line has not been a bright spot for the team, as they were once regarded as a safety net for the team with so many juniors and seniors in the rotation.
They have battled through injuries with Darius Washington, Robert Scott Jr., and Jeremiah Byers. Thankfully, they were able to get Washington back versus Memphis, but Scott Jr. and Byers were still not playing. As a result, they had to rely on the youngster Jaylen Early to get the job done at right tackle.
Even though Early played well at tackle, it is still ideal to have both Scott Jr. and Byers back in the rotation. Both of them have played a ton of snaps in their collegiate careers.
After Wednesday's practice, head football coach Mike Norvell provided updates about the injuries to offensive tackles Jeremiah Byers and Robert Scott Jr.:
"Jeremiah has been working in practice. We will see how that translates as we get closer to the game. Rob Scott was back out there today too. We want those guys to be ready to roll before we put them back in the game so we will see how that progresses. I like where they are trending."
Honestly, Florida State needs all the good news that it can get. This 2024 season has been a disaster on so many different levels. It helps that offensive coordinator/offensive line coach Alex Atkins returned to the sideline for the California game and will not miss any additional time.
However, Atkins can only do so much for the offensive line. At some point, the players have to emerge as factors to get the desired results on the field. The Seminoles are currently listed as underdogs in their contest versus SMU this Saturday. It would be very beneficial for this offense to get both veteran offensive tackles back.
