Is CB Azareye'h Thomas the best player on the Noles' roster for the 2024 season?
Florida State football conducted its Spring Showcase this past Saturday. There were some good and bad moments in the Seminoles' showcase.
However, head football coach Mike Norvell is still very confident in the ability of his program who has a combined 23-4 record over the past two seasons. As most of the fan base knows, the Seminoles have several contributors from last year who graduated or have declared for the 2024 NFL Draft.
Those players will not be suiting up in the garnet and gold on Saturdays anymore. However, as most elite programs do, teams replenish depth that they lose by acquiring talent via the recruiting trail and transfer portal and develop players on the roster.
There are over thirty-eight scholarship newcomers that the program is welcoming in for the 2024 season (could be even more as the Seminoles could add more transfers). However, one player that I want to mention is junior cornerback Azareye'h Thomas from Niceville, Florida.
He has been a serviceable defensive back that has had opportunities to be successful. He was behind starters such as Renardo Green and Jarrian Jones. Both Green and Jones have graduated and moved on to the NFL.
As a result, both Azareye'h Thomas and Fentrell Cypress II will be tasked with manning the outside cornerback spots in the defense. Defensive coordinator Adam Fuller often utilizes a 4-2-5 defensive scheme which requires defensive backs to be interchanged.
It will be difficult to take the 6'2" lengthy cornerback off the field. He had an impressive 2023 season where he recorded 29 total tackles (4.5 for loss) and 10 pass breakups. With new opportunities coming this season, Thomas has emerged as one of if not the best players on the Seminoles' roster.
He makes his presence known on several different occasions where opposing wide receivers have a difficult time creating separation. There might be position battles on the roster with a variety of spots, but Thomas has 1000% locked down the outside cornerback position.
