FSU softball uses walk off and offensive explosion to sweep Nicholls
By Kelvin Hunt
FSU softball improved to 11-3 and finished the Dugout Club Classic undefeated with a doubleheader sweep over Nicholls Saturday afternoon. The Noles needed a come from behind walk-off win to beat the Colonels in the first game. Michaela Edenfield hit a single up the middle to score Hallie Wacaser with the winning run. FSU entered the bottom of the seventh trailing 4-3 after Allison Royalty gave up a solo home run in the top of the seventh. Jaysoni Beachum reached on an error, and a pinch runner (Annie Potter) stole second and advanced to third base on a wild pitch. Wacaser doubled to left field to tie the game and set up Edenfield's walk-off single. Makenna Reid got the start and went 5.1 innings, allowing three earned runs, one walk, and three strikeouts. The three runs came via two home runs from one Nicholls batter. Beachum led the Noles with two hits and two RBI.
The second game saw Allison Royalty throw a complete game shutout for an 8-0 win. Royalty went five innings, allowed two hits, one walk, and four strikeouts on 65 pitches (41 strikes). The FSU offense got on the board in the second inning on a Jaysoni Beachum solo home run. Katie Dack delivered an RBI single to push the lead to 2-0. Kennedy Harp continues to take advantage of her opportunities, lacing an RBI triple in the fourth. Beachum hit her second home run of the day in the bottom of the fifth to make it 6-0. Edenfield sent everyone home early with a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth for the 8-0 win.
These six wins were what the FSU softball team needed after a tough weekend last week. However, we'll see if the improvement shown this week carries against tougher competition next week in Oregon for the Janes Sanders Classic.
