FSU softball powers past FIU with doubleheader sweep
By Kelvin Hunt
FSU softball improved to (7-3) with a doubleheader sweep in the Dugout Club Classic in Tallahassee Thursday evening. FSU won the first game 7-3 and the second 9-1. It was a solid combination of pitching and hitting for the Noles in both games. Makenna Reid got her first win this season, pitching five innings, allowing two earned runs, one walk, and three strikeouts. She's still not getting many swings and misses like last year, but she showed some progress with a change up at times. Amaya Ross had herself a night, going 2-3 with a homerun and two RBI. Jahni Kerr had two RBI, Isa Torres and Kaley Mudge had an RBI. The Nole scored two runs in the bottom of the second and five in the bottom of the fifth. FIU committed four errors to aid the Noles.
The second game saw Ashytn Danley pitch well to get the win. She pitched five innings, allowing two hits, zero walks, and two strikeouts. Allison Royalty completed the final two innings, allowing one hit and striking out one batter. Michaela Edenfield led the offense with two home runs and three RBI. Amaya Ross went 3-3, including a triple and RBI. Jahni Kerr went 2-3, and Hallie Wacaser hit a home run.
Overall Thoughts
As I mentioned in the preview, FIU isn't a great hitting team, so it was good to see Reid and Danley have some much-needed success on the mound. Reid must continue to work on a secondary pitch to become a dominant force because teams are not getting fooled by her speed much anymore. The FSU offense had 20 hits in the doubleheader and did a solid job of putting the ball in play. The Noles will be in action again Friday afternoon in a doubleheader against Charleston Southern. The first game will be at 3 p.m. ET.
