FSU softball: Major takeaways from 'Noles sweeping Notre Dame
By Kelvin Hunt
Kaley Mudge and Devyn Flaherty Emerging
FSU has had steady production from veteran players Michaela Edenfield(before her injury), Kalei Harding, and Jahni Kerr and has seen the emergence of Amaya Ross. However, they've been missing the production of veteran players like Kaley Mudge and Devyn Flaherty. Mudge started the season hurt and tried to play through it. Flaherty has gotten off to a slow start, similar to last year, but both have started to come on lately. Mudge had a strong series against Notre Dame, going 7-10 with two RBI and three runs scored.
Mudge is batting .371 with a .470 on-base percentage. Flaherty has quietly raised her batting average to .279, and her on-base percentage is .422. She went 3-8 with three runs scored and a stolen base in the series. FSU needed help offensively from these two veterans anyway, but their emergence is imperative with Edenfield out for an extended time. Mudge at the top of the lineup and Flaherty near the bottom of the lineup is like having two lead-off hitters back-to-back. If both continue to hit and get on, that sets up big scoring opportunities with Beachum and Harding hitting behind them.
Final Thoughts
The Noles are only have one more loss than Duke and right behind them in the ACC standings. The Noles will travel to play a bad Boston College team in ACC play next weekend. It will be another opportunity to keep their momentum going as they have two more winnable ACC series after that.
