FSU football: Will the offensive line perform better versus the Clemson Tigers?
Florida State's offensive unit has had a rough outing this season as the Seminoles' coaching staff thought that signal-caller DJ Uiagalelei could bridge the gap between the younger options such as Brock Glenn, Luke Kromenhoek, and Trever Jackson on the roster.
While I didn't think that Uiagalelei was going to be a world-beater at quarterback, I think he was at least a serviceable option to give the team 8 or 9 regular season wins and compete for an ACC Championship.
One big reason that many individuals thought that the former Clemson and Oregon State transfer would do well is that the offensive lineman is a veteran group that had the potential to be a top-ten unit in the country.
However, the offensive line has underperformed on all levels. Even head football coach Mike Norvell stated in the offseason that he was excited about the talent in the group. He even mentioned that he thought Darius Washington was an All-American type at the left tackle position.
It has been disappointing as fans thought that offensive coordinator/offensive line coach Alex Atkins could provide leadership as the offensive line continues to improve. The offense has struggled to run their bread and butter with running the football in 2024.
I would have thought that you were insane if you told me that the Seminoles ranked 130th in the FBS in rushing yards per game (65.2). This was surprising when the program added Roydell Williams and Jaylin Lucas via the transfer portal, who are both injured.
Florida State is now having to rely on veteran Lawrance Toafili and true freshman Kameron Davis as they enter into a matchup over the Clemson Tigers. The duo has been performing relatively well.
Clemson's defense averages two sacks per game (61st in the FBS). While the Florida State allows 2.4 sacks per game (94th in the FBS), quarterback DJ Uiagalelei is not necessarily a mobile signal-caller. Brock Glenn bring another dimension to the game plan.
As we all know, the Clemson's defensive unit is one of the best in the country. It will be a tough task for Florida State's offensive line looks to get back on track. It was a tough blow that offensive guard Richie Leonard IV (who has been one of the better offensive lineman) is out of the remainder of the season.
Oddmakers have the Seminoles at 14-point underdogs at home. However, I expect the offensive line to play better and more motivated at least in the first half. The home crowd at Doak Campbell Stadium should help there.
